May 2 Spotted: Runway Fashion, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Every now and then there is a film that is fashion laden (think Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City, both costume designed by Patricia Field), but they are usually reserved for contemporary movies. Costume Designer Trish Summervile went the high-fashion route for dressing the main characters in the film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Clothes were an integral part of Suzanne Collins's trilogy and it served as a key point in the narrative. The clothes of this post-Apocalyptic story served to contrast the world of the 12 districts and the privileged and inaccessible world of the Capitol. Although some might criticize Summerville for not designing many of the key costumes in the film, having to costume hundreds of extras in only a few months, I'd say that the use high-end fashion for some of the stand-out looks were not only welcomed, but aided in the storytelling process. After all, how many of us can say we have an Alexander McQueen dress laying around? The world of extravagant high-fashion is just as inaccessible as the world of the Capitol. Sure it was risky, but there's something to be said about how elegantly Summerville collaborated with other designers for this film.
